So how do you start? One logical technique would be to pick a programming language and run with it. Unfortunately, we cannot suggest what the correct computer language might be for everybody for all purposes. Ask ten programmers what language you should learn and you get ten different responses.

Computer programming is the process of designing, and maintaining the source code of computer programs. This source code is written in a number of programming languages. The code may be a modification or something completely new. The purpose of programming is to create a program with desired performance. The writing of source code requires expertise in many different fields, including knowledge of mathematics, algorithms and formal logic.

Many people think they must choose a specific language in order to become a programmer, believing that they can only do that language. They ask themselves, "Should I be a C programmer or a Java programmer?" That's completely the wrong question. The right question is "How can I become a good programmer?"

Computer programmer is a broad term used to describe IT staff who have learned the code for at least two major programming languages. The field of information technology has expanded so much that there are different genres of computer programming languages. Web-based, functional, operational, and graphical are just the main types of computer languages. Computer programmers are folks who write computer software. Their jobs usually involve:

  • Coding and Compilation
  • Documentation and Integration
  • Debugging and Maintenance
  • Requirements analysis
  • Software architecture
  • Software testing and Specification

Unfortunately the employment market has contributed greatly to misconceptions about computer programming. Companies will often advertise for employees with specific computer language skills, perhaps because it is difficult for hiring managers to judge competence or general ability in computer programming. There are several things to consider when choosing a computer programming school: programming language, equipment, accreditation, faculty, and reputation.

Computer programming education is widely available at community, career and online colleges. This type of programs is typically one to two years in length, and provides the training necessary to become a computer programmer. The best computer programming school will have the latest computer hardware and software available for student use. Review the qualifications of the faculty or course instructors with care. Most schools post a short biography of their course instructors on the school's website. Review this information and look for both academic credentials and working experience.

People who want to create website applications need to learn Java®, PHP, HTML and JavaScript®, at the very least. People who are interested in working with systems, such as SAP® need to learn Advanced Business Application Programming (ABAP), the programming language of SAP®. Only accredited schools are able to offer students access to government student aid programs. When looking for a computer programming school, check the accreditation status. Courses from an accredited school can be transferred to other post-secondary institutions. Check the availability of the equipment to ensure there are enough opportunities for every student to practice. Almost all classes should be held in computer labs, allowing students to gain hands-on experience writing code, fixing bugs, and using testing protocols.

It is important to note that this is a growing field and requires dedication to continuing education in order to keep your skills relevant. Look for schools that offer short courses or certificates in the latest technology to students after graduation. These programs are typically available on weekends, in the evenings, or online.
